Cortez is nestled amid the spectacular panoramas of the La Plata Mountains, The Sleeping Ute Mountain and the "green table" of Mesa Verde. Known as the archaeological center of America and gateway to Mesa Verde National Park, Cortez reflects the region's fascinating cultural heritage and Native American history.

Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, a forerunner in archaeological research and education, offers hands-on learning experiences. The Cortez Cultural Center contains a variety of data on archaeology and American Indian culture. Developed to promote intercultural understanding and education, the Center's forum dabbles in the arts, education and Native cultures. Enjoy Native American dancers, storytellers, artists and historians. For seasonal opportunities, the summer festivities begin with a week-long Indian Arts and Culture Festival over Memorial Day weekend followed by the Mancos Old Fine Fiddler's Contest, June 4-6, at Echo Basin Ranch, above Mancos Valley. Cortez also houses the most extensive park system in Colorado with more than 116 acres of parks, including trails, walking paths and ponds, providing a refreshing oasis for relaxation.

Recreation facilities include an 18-hole, 72-par golf course; outdoor pool; tennis and basketball courts; a disc-golf course; BMX track; and a skateboard park. The brand new Cortez Recreation Center is now complete and open to the public. For a unique experience in southwestern Colorado, Cortez should be the heart of your adventure.
