The year 1860 marked the beginning of a dream for three brothers
and a group of British investors when they started building the
largest hot springs pool ever in the newly established town of Glenwood
Springs. The already-in-existence mineral hot springs were considered
a sacred healing spot by Ute Indians for hundreds of years. Big
money, beautiful hotels and a quiet retreat were some of the reasons
gangsters, gamblers, debutantes and presidents found their way to
Glenwood Springs in days of old.
Today, people from around the world are drawn to the allure of
fine dining, day spas, hot springs, vapor caves and eclectic shopping
in one of America's quaintest towns. After you've skied Aspen's
four mountains, just 40 miles away, spend a day relaxing in Glenwood's
natural hot springs or treat yourself to the Yampah Vapor Caves.
Some of the world's best mountain biking, Gold Medal fishing and
rafting can be found in Glenwood Springs. Exciting Class II and
III rapids of the Colorado River end at the Hot Springs Pool. All
ability levels can enjoy the scenic bike path through Glenwood Canyon
along the Colorado River. Day trips venture to such locales as the
historic mining towns of Redstone and Marble (30 miles), Flat Tops
Wilderness Area (5 miles) and Sunlight Mountain Resort (12 miles).
A scenic drive to the Colorado National Monument (90 miles); a trip
to the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park via the tramway to the top
of Iron Mountain (where Glenwood Caverns and Historic Fairy Caves
lie); and rock climbing at Rifle Falls State Park (45 miles) complete
any trip to Glenwood Springs. This attractive natural playground
made its historic mark as early as 1880 and to this day, continues
to draw people with world-class amenities and irresistible experiences.
