Telluride's physical beauty has long been noted. Nestled in a box
canyon etched from millions of years of glacier activity, this rustic
Victorian town captivates all who happen upon it. Between the 365-foot
waterfall at the head of town (the start of the mighty San Miguel
River), steep mountainscapes rising straight up from the valley
bottom and a colorful history, Telluride is a place people never
forget. Additionally, tons of thrilling outdoor activities, pampering
treatments, top-notch shopping, buzzing nightlife and worldly dining
opportunities keep visitors more than entertained.
Since 1972, Telluride's "white gold rush" has been on
an upward boom cycle. Ever so gradually and ever so wisely, Telluride
Ski & Golf Company has crafted one of the best, visitor-friendly,
ski resorts in the world. Winter poses everything from open bowls
to gladed trees, steep moguls to gentle cruisers, tight chutes to
a thrilling terrain park. There's something for every type of snow
lover.
In the summertime, the Telluride area transforms into a giant
wildflower-ridden playground with hiking, biking, fishing, camping,
climbing, golfing, horseback riding and four-wheeling. There is
also a string of music festivals featuring jazz, bluegrass, blues
and chamber music; the highly acclaimed Telluride Film Festival;
athletic races; craft shows; the Tech and Wild West festivals; and
many other weekend events. In fact, Telluride hosts so many festivals
it has earned the title, "Festival Capital of the Rockies."
Telluride's sister community, Mountain Village, rests in a wild
place surrounded by 360-degree views of the jagged San Juans. Connected
to Telluride by a free gondola ride, Mountain Village offers locals
and visitors unrelenting peak-ridden vistas that change as swiftly
as the wind shifts. Delicate aspens and deep green conifers thread
themselves along meticulously landscaped roadways, while grand alpine
getaways illuminate the mountainside. Summer activities are abundant
in Mountain Village. Beginning at the St. Sophia Gondola Station,
a new frisbee golf course loops its way around the ski area. Mountain
biking and hiking trails also lure guests into the warmth of the
summer sun. On Wednesday evenings, July through September, Mountain
Village offers the Sunset Concert Series where musical guests from
across the country perform free, outdoor concerts in the Town Square.
